ST GEORGE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH

RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION WORKS

St George’s Anglican Church is a nationally significant colonial building that is a unique conjunction of two buildings. Colonial architect John Lee Archers original church forms the Nave (1838) and the Bell Tower and Portico by convict architect and engineer James Blackburn was added subsequently.

This project required significant remedial stonework, cornice replacement and stabilization of the Portico and extensive conservation works.

Research was undertaken to ensure suitable sandstone that was tolerant to a marine, high salt environment could be sourced and that it was of a suitable size to replace the large 2-3 tonne main cornice stones. Research included assessing the viability of precast ‘sandstone’ concrete as a potential cost-effective alternative. The project was successfully completed utilizing the skills of specialist conservation and restoration stonemasons, in collaboration with the heritage restoration team.
