PENNY CONTEMPORARY
ART GALLERY
187 Liverpool Street had been a local fish monger from (at least) 1887, perhaps even from when the building was constructed in 1842. In Hobart’s collective memory it was THAT1950’s fish shop with water on the windows and a marvellous terrazzo floor, worn down from the sheer volume of the Friday trade.
The gallery required a sensitive reworking of the street frontage, retaining the 1920’s black glass fanlight and street numbering. Minor internal reworking has created a bespoke space for new and emerging artists without displacing the original buildings story.
